Our weekly minor league report canvases the Yankees farm system, providing updates about the status of the teams in action and the organization's top prospects.
Notes: Top-30 prospect rankings (via MLBPipeline.com) are club based with overall MLB ranks, if applicable, in parenthesis. Prospects currently in the major leagues will not be covered here. Team records and statistics are through games played Aug. 30, 2018, unless otherwise noted.
Top 10 prospects
No. 1 (No. 27) -- Justus Sheffield (LHP) -- Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre -- ETA 2018
Sheffield appeared twice in relief this past week, hurling a combined three innings, allowing one run and striking out one batter. Sheffield, who tends to exhibit command issues, has yet to walk a batter in his three relief appearances. He has begun each relief outing with a clean inning, so it will be interesting to see if he is brought on in a high-leverage situation before he receives his anticipated call-up to aid the Yankees' bullpen.
No. 2 (No. 46) -- Estevan Florial (OF) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Florial has entered another rough patch, notching three hits in his last 23 at-bats. Florial owns a .693 OPS with Tampa this season, one in which he missed two months due to an injury. As such, Florial will be among the Yankees prospects playing in the Arizona Fall League this year.
No. 3 (No. 73) -- Jonathan Loaisiga (RHP) -- Double-A -- ETA 2018
For the second straight start, Loaisiga tossed four innings of one-run ball (off a home run) while striking out three batters. He did not walk a batter. Once Trenton's season (it is headed to the postseason) is complete, Loaisiga could be among the players added to New York's expanded roster in September.
No. 4 (No. 75) -- Albert Abreu (RHP) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Abreu did not make a start since the last report. The right-hander has thrown just 62 2/3 innings for Tampa this season to the tune of a 4.16 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Surprisingly (as of now), Abreu will not be joining Florial in Arizona this fall.
No. 5 -- Domingo Acevedo (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2019
Acevedo got the win in relief of Loaisiga's start, tossing three innings of scoreless ball in his re-turn from a brief rehab assignment. Acevedo, who maintains a 2.92 ERA in 64 2/3 innings, will be pitching in the Arizona Fall League.
No. 6 -- Anthony Seigler (C) -- Rookie Pulaski -- ETA 2022
Seigler, the Yankees' first-round pick in June's first-year player draft (No. 23 overall), finished his brief professional introduction (12 games, 43 at-bats) hitting .209 with a .340 on-base percentage and a .233 slugging percentage.
No. 7 -- Clarke Schmidt (RHP) -- Short-A Staten Island -- ETA 2020
Schmidt has not made an appearance since Aug. 5, yet is listed as active on Staten Island's roster. The Yankees' first-round pick in 2017 (No. 16 overall), Schmidt has 10 strikeouts and two walks in the 8 1/3 innings of work since his promotion to Staten Island.
No. 8 -- Trevor Stephan (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2020
Stephan made it back-to-back strong starts, working six innings in which he allowed just one run. Stephen walked two and struck out four. Stephen is trying to finish the season strong after success in Tampa (1.98 ERA in 41 innings) and an up-and-down stay in Trenton (4.85 ERA in 78 innings).
No. 9 -- Luis Medina (RHP) -- Rookie Pulaski -- ETA 2021
Medina's final start of the season went much like the others: lots of walks (five) and strikeouts (four) in minimal innings of work (3 2/3). Medina finished the season with a 6.25 ERA in 36 in-nings. His control is a certain issue (46 walks), but his stuff is electric when on (47 strikeouts).
No. 10 -- Matt Sauer (RHP) -- Short-A Staten Island -- ETA 2021
Sauer bounced back from his last start, pitching six innings of one-run ball. Sauer walked one and struck out one in the outing. The effort lowered Sauer's ERA with Staten Island to 4.23 in 61 2/3 innings.
