Our weekly minor league report canvases the Yankees farm system, providing updates about the status of the teams in action and the organization's top prospects.
Notes: Top-30 prospect rankings (via MLBPipeline.com) are club based with overall MLB ranks, if applicable, in parenthesis. Prospects currently in the major leagues will not be covered here. Team records and statistics are through games played Aug. 9, 2018, unless otherwise noted.
Top 10 prospects
No. 1 (No. 27) -- Justus Sheffield (LHP) -- Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre -- ETA 2018
This part of the report is turning into a broken record, but the Yankees are not complaining. Sheffield tossed five innings of scoreless ball, allowing three hits and one walk in Thursday's start. In Sheffield's last 10 starts, he owns a 1.56 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings.
No. 2 (No. 46) -- Estevan Florial (OF) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Florial is in a deep slump over his last 10 games, in which he has just five hits in 34 at-bats. Florial has struck out 12 times and walked just twice over the span. He missed a couple of months due to injury, but the minimal production in Tampa (.651 OPS) might be a bigger disappointment.
No. 3 (No. 75) -- Jonathan Loaisiga (RHP) -- Triple-A -- ETA 2018
Loaisiga, who is currently on the seven-day disabled list, made a dramatic and very useful jump from Double-A to the big leagues earlier this season, and his ascent to the No. 3 spot in this listing and a position in MLB Pipeline's top 100 is equally as impressive. The Yankees turned some eyes when they added Loaisiga to the 40-man roster before last December's Rule-5 draft, but is it clear they made an excellent call.
No. 4 (No. 77) -- Albert Abreu (RHP) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Abreu remains on a rehab assignment in the Gulf Coast League. The righty has not performed well in the three appearances thus far, however the Yankees simply hope he can finish the season healthy. Due to the two stints on the disabled list, Abreu has thrown just 48 1/3 innings this season, in which he sports a 4.28 ERA with batters hitting just .228 off him.
No. 5 -- Domingo Acevedo (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2019
Acevedo is on the seven-day disabled list with upper-arm soreness. In 61 2/3 innings this season, Acevedo owns a 3.06 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 50 strikeouts. As with Florial and Abreu, Acevedo's curtailed season due to injury could have an impact on the overall timeframe of his development.
No. 6 -- Anthony Seigler (C) -- Rookie Pulaski -- ETA 2022
Seigler, the Yankees' first-round pick in June's first-year Player draft (No. 23 overall), is in a bit of a rough stretch. Seigler has three hits in his last 18 at-bats and is hitting .200 since his promotion to Pulaski on July 31.
No. 7 -- Clarke Schmidt (RHP) -- Short-A Staten Island -- ETA 2020
Schmidt made his second start for the Pizza Rats, hurling 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Schmidt has allowed just one run in his brief stay with Staten Island. The Yankees' first-round pick in 2017 (No. 16 overall), Schmidt has 10 strikeouts and two walks in the 8 1/3 innings of work.
No. 8 -- Trevor Stephan (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2020
Stephan's eye-opening time with High-A Tampa (1.98 ERA across 41 innings) is now a distant memory. Stephan allowed six runs in four innings in his latest start, which pushed his ERA to 5.34 in 62 1/3 innings with Trenton. If there is a silver lining, Stephan has struck out 65 batters for the Thunder.
No. 9 -- Luis Medina (RHP) -- Rookie Pulaski -- ETA 2021
Medina tossed five innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts in his latest start. Medina has now allowed just three runs across his last three starts (13 innings). The solid stretch has lowered Medina's ERA to 6.04 from 9.39.
No. 10 -- Matt Sauer (RHP) -- Short-A Staten Island -- ETA 2021
Sauer's skid has now reached three straight starts. In his latest effort, he allowed five runs on 11 hits in five innings. Sauer's ERA has ballooned from 2.01 before the span to 4.44 after allowing 16 earned runs in his last 15 1/3 innings.
