They still don't know. But we can tell you that agents and clubs all seem optimistic that there will be a season.

Keeping in mind that the coronavirus -- and not humans -- will decide this, one way forward could involve an agreement between the league and players in May, a few weeks of spring training in June, and regular season games in July.

These could take place in Arizona -- still the most viable option in the eyes of many -- but plans are agile enough to allow the league to expand or pivot to other locations if possible. A series of tournaments in a small handful of cities is possible. My colleague Jeff Passan has a good write-up of all this up at ESPN today, and I'm hearing the same info on timing.

@zevi_weis: Do the Yankees plan on extending James Paxton?

We'd classify that as more of a wait-and-see. Paxton proved himself a fit for New York last year, but his long list of physical issues makes his market difficult to predict.

We'll have to see how he fares during a shortened walk year. If he's really good, here's betting that Scott Boras can find a team willing to pay more than the Yankees. But the Yanks do like Paxton and wouldn't mind finding a way to bring him back. It will all depend on the demand for him and the price.

@brb_2499: Any rumblings of a Boone extension? Any chance they tear up the option year and extend him before that?

The Yankees don't tend to deal with manager and GM contracts until those deals are up. Because of that, we wouldn't expect an extension.

Having said that, the Yankees do realize they have a special manager, and one who grew into the job even more in year two. Boone was tentative during his first postseason in 2018, leaving both CC Sabathia and Luis Severino in for too long against the Red Sox.

In 2019, he seemed in total command of playoff games, balancing detailed, analytics-based game plans with gut feel. He had always been a natural relating to players. The team knows that Boone is a keeper, and it would take an unforeseen disaster to prevent them from giving him another deal once the current one expires after next season.

@brb_2499: Any rumblings on extensions for arbitration players such as Kahnle, Green, Sanchez, Judge, etc?

There wasn't much buzz on this before the pandemic shutdown. Now, of course, MLB has a freeze on all transactions, and that includes extensions to players already controlled by a team.

We've talked a bit about Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez, and how the Yankees are going to have to make decisions before long. Injuries have made Judge a more complicated case, and to an extent the same goes for Sanchez. Both are all-world talents, but it's hard to pin down their market value.

As for Tommy Kahnle and Chad Green -- if they never did it for Dellin Betances, they probably won't do it for these guys. That's just a gut reaction, but we have never gotten the sense that locking up in-house relievers was top-of-mind for the Yankees.
