Luis Severino is on his way to getting back into pinstripes sooner rather than later.
Prior to Saturday’s game against the White Sox, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that the right-hander was still working out in Tampa, and by all accounts he’s looked very good.
“He threw another sim game [Wednesday] and I heard it went really well,” Boone said “I have not seen that outing on video yet, but the reports were glowing. Velocity, shape of the slider, all those things he's doing really well. I haven't looked at a schedule to see when he's in a [rehab] game yet, but we're getting close to that.”
Darren O’Day, who has not appeared in a game since late April due to a strained rotator cuff, threw in the outfield prior to Saturday’s game. Boone said it’ll be some time before he’s back in the bullpen, however.
“It's still a ways away,” Boone said. “It's been three or four weeks since he's been shut down, so I think it's going to be at least that to build him back up. Hopefully everything goes well, whether that's sometime in June, but we're in the early days of starting a throwing program. So we'll see how the next days and weeks unfold.”
