Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson is unsure if he will play next year or will retire at the end of the 2023 MLB season.

Speaking with Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, the 37-year-old said he "didn't know" about his future plans.

“It kind of just depends on how I feel going through this year and this season and all of that and talking to my family. But that’s really, I get asked that from not just you, but from other people," Donaldson told The Athletic on Sunday ahead of New York's doubleheader at Fenway Park.

Donaldson is in the final year of a four-year, $92 million deal he signed with Minnesota in the 2020 offseason. Injuries have limited his action this season to just 17 games and 60 plate appearances.

So far in 2023, he has walked six times and struck out 17 times and has just eight hits. But six of those hits have gone for home runs, which means his poor average (.151) and on-base percentage (.233) are masked by a respectable .491 slugging and .724 OPS.

“I’ve hit a lot of balls hard,” he said, via The Athletic. “Unfortunately, some of them haven’t fallen at the moment. … I feel really good about where I’m at, and I haven’t really gotten to the point where I’m playing every day.”

Donaldson added: “The fact that I am making solid contact (and) hitting the ball hard in the air and the more that I can do that, I feel like I can get results at the plate."

But if this is to be his 13th and final season in a big league career, he hasn't given his future too much thought.

“It would be, ‘What would be best?’” Donaldson said. “If I feel like I want to play still, and I feel like with my family situation that’s what I want to do. … But I haven’t put more thought into it.”

Donaldson came to the Yanks ahead of the 2022 season in a trade with Minnesota that saw Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela join the Minnesota Twins and Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben

Rortvedt come to New York.

In 149 games with the Bronx club, he has 21 homers, 70 RBI, a .686 OPS and 95 OPS+ while striking out in 31.1 percent of his at-bats.
