The Yankees traded for Oakland A's right-handed pitchers Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino, as SNY MLB insider Andy Martino reported Monday.

New York did so without giving up its top two prospects, shortstops Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza.

It did, however, deal LHP JP Sears and three prospects -- LHP Ken Waldichuk, RHP Luis Medina and 2B Cooper Bowman.

The A's have been asking about Waldichuk -- the Yankees' top pitching prospect -- for days.

"Waldichuk is a really good prospect, but the Yankees needed Montas and kept their two SS," according to Martino.

Montas and Trivino, meanwhile, give New York a starter and reliever.

"There's no question, we added four -- in their specific positions, I feel like -- high-caliber players," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on the field at Yankee Stadium, before Monday's 7:10 p.m. game between New York and the Seattle Mariners, also referencing outfielder Andrew Benintendi and right-handed reliever Scott Effross.

"So to intertwine them with our group already, yeah, I mean, on paper, we're better, but I will caution it with that's just on paper. We've got to do it still and go out and prove that, but we definitely upped our talent in these last few days."

The 29-year-old Montas is 4-9 but has pitched to a 3.18 ERA in 104.2 IP over 19 starts this season. Montas also has a 1.137 WHIP and 9.4 K/9 on the year.

"Well, obviously, it starts with a lively fastball -- he's got a mid-to-upper-90s fastball, four-seam and two-seam that he attacks you with," Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said of Montas, to YES Network's Meredith Marakovits, prior to Monday's game.

"And we saw it firsthand here he came in here and pitched against us at the stadium. So he's got a presence to him out there and then he's got a full complement of secondary pitches. So it's an upper-echelon starter and he'll fit right in."

Trivino -- who turns 31 on Oct. 1 -- has a 6.47 ERA, 1.875 WHIP and 12.7 K/9 in 32 IP over 39 appearances this season. Before the year, Trivino had a career 3.70 ERA in 231 IP over 221 games from 2018-21.

"It's a guy that we've known for a while, had interest in the last couple years," Blake told Marakovits of Trivino. "He's pitched in some high-leverage situations in Oakland. It's a good right-handed reliever that can match up well and there's some stuff that we can work on to help match up with lefties a little bit better.

"But just looking at how his season's been -- the superficial numbers and the ERA aren't great, but the underlying stuff points to a better year than maybe on the surface and I think just a couple little things, couple little tweaks and we should be in a good spot with him."
