The Yankees (90-49, 9.0 GA in AL East) continue a three-game series with the Texas Rangers (68-71, 22.0 GB in AL West, 12.5 GB for second Wild Card) Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees notes

The Yankees had their 122-game streak without suffering a shutout snapped Monday when the Rangers held them scoreless, 7-0, in a six-hit performance. The last time they were shutout happened June 30, 2018, in the form of an 11-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Against the Rangers, four players went hitless and four others had one hit, while OF Mike Tauchman led the efforts with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. The retun of DH Edwin Encarnacion, whom the Yankees activated from the 10-day IL after a two-game rehab stint in the minor leagues with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, should pack a punch in the lineup.

Who is starting for the Yankees?

LHP James Paxton (11-6, 4.39 ERA) looks for his latest win after he went a perfect 5-0 in August. Over those starts, Paxton logged 30.1 innings and pitched to a 3.56 ERA, striking out 35 while walking nine. Last Wednesday at the Seattle Mariners, Paxton lacked his best stuff and walked four, but he pushed through for 5.0 innings of two runs on one hit -- a home run -- to strikeout four and earn another victory. Paxton's last loss came July 26 at Boston, going 4.0 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits -- four home runs -- despite nine strikeouts to no walks as the Red Sox pulled away 10-5.

Who is starting for the Rangers?

RHP Edinson Volquez (0-0, 6.23 ERA) opens for the Rangers in only his fourth outing of the season. After logging two appearances March 30 and April 4, Volquez landed on the 60-day IL with an elbow injury. He returned Sunday, getting through a scoreless inning of the Rangers' 11-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners with a strikeout and a walk and without allowing a hit.

Upcoming schedule

The Yankees complete their three-game home series Wednesday -- again at 6:35 p.m. -- when they face Rangers RHP Lance Lynn (14-9, 3.77 ERA). A projected starter has not yet been set for the Yankees, who may elect to go with an opener such as RHP Chad Greene (2-4, 5.01 ERA).
