Videos of Robinson dribbling and shooting have popped up on social media over the past few months. When they drafted him, the Knicks talked about Robinson’s ability to knock down a shot from the perimeter.
But he hasn’t gotten the opportunity to shoot from the perimeter during games in his first two seasons.
Four of Robinson’s 632 career field-goal attempts have come beyond 10 feet.
It will be interesting to see if Tom Thibodeau and his staff put Robinson in position to shoot from the perimeter in 2020-21. It seems like Robinson is eager for the chance to shoot from the outside.
He worked in practice and before games last season on his outside shot. Before the year, he predicted that he’d be shooting more from the outside. But the coaching staff didn’t give Robinson an opportunity to shoot from the perimeter last year.
Will that be different under Thibodeau? We may start to find out later this month. Thibodeau and his staff will start to work with the Knicks at the team practice facility, beginning on Sept. 14. The voluntary workouts give Thibodeau the chance to see Robinson and the other Knicks in a formal setting for the first time. They’re expected to include scrimmages.
Something worth noting on the workouts: Thibodeau and others with the Timberwolves at the time were enamored with Dennis Smith Jr. coming out of college, sources say. Thibodeau and others from the organization attended Smith Jr.’s private pre-draft workout.
Obviously, that draft was more than three years ago. So Thibodeau’s impression of Smith Jr. before the draft doesn’t necessarily indicate how the coach views the point guard now. But it will be interesting to see if Thibodeau and his staff, which includes top development coaches, can help Smith Jr. bounce back from an inconsistent 2019-20 campaign in New York.
