The Giants made a really odd decision on Sunday to get rid of a 23-year-old quarterback with plenty of potential without getting anything in return.

But Davis Webb likely won't be unemployed for long. And he could -- and should -- be a perfect fit with the Jets.

Yes, the Jets already have their quarterback of the future and nothing or nobody will stop the Sam Darnold Era from dawning this week. But they also only have two quarterbacks on their roster, and one of them is the 39-year-old Josh McCown.

Claiming Webb off the waiver wire in the next 24 hours would give them an inexpensive third-string quarterback that they can continue to develop over the next two years. Maybe he can be their backup of the future, since McCown is likely done after this season. Maybe he can step in this season if Darnold struggles and McCown gets hurt -- not an unlikely scenario since rookie quarterbacks often struggle and McCown is … well, old.

But if nothing else, Webb can be an asset that may be useful for a team looking to build through the draft. The Buffalo Bills got a fifth-round pick for backup quarterback A.J. McCarron on Saturday. The Giants had reportedly talked to the Raiders about a deal like that for Webb, too. And the Jets, of course, recently got a third-round pick in a deal with the Saints for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Yes, Bridgewater is a former Pro Bowl with a much deeper resume than Webb currently has. But McCarron, who has made three NFL starts, wasn't all that much more experienced. Maybe Webb is a bit of an unknown still, but he's a young quarterback signed through 2020 and it's worth a shot to see if he could bring the Jets back a draft pick in return -- whether it's later this season, during the offseason, or after training camp next year.

And with Maccagnan determined to continue to build through the draft -- and perhaps always willing to package picks to move up in the draft the way he did this offseason to get Darnold -- every pick counts.

In a way, it would be a lot like the no-risk move they made with Bridgewater. The Jets brought in Bridgewater (and paid him $1 million) knowing they planned to draft a quarterback at No. 3 -- one they hoped would start. They kept Bridgewater around until they were sure of their plans, and then they flipped him for the best pick they could get.

It was a brilliant move, and those are the kind of moves smart teams make. No, the return for Webb likely wouldn't be as high. Then again, if he sticks around into next summer and thrives in the preseason, maybe a team still searching for a quarterback of the future would give up something valuable to give him a shot.

And in the meantime, there's no risk at all. Webb is inexpensive -- he's due about $1.7 million over the next two seasons, and his contract wouldn't hurt their salary cap situation at all if he was cut. Besides, with a 39-year-old backup, the Jets should have a third quarterback on the roster, and one with a year of NFL experience is much better than one with no experience at all. Webb could be helpful to them as insurance in the short term, then helpful as an asset in the long term.

And who knows? The Giants still have a 37-year-old starting quarterback who is signed for only two more seasons, and with no real plan to replace him.

Maybe in a year or so the Giants are going to want Webb back.
