MLB teams are able to promote any player on their 40-man roster after September 1.

In addition to Dominic Smith, the Mets this past weekend added pitchers Eric Hanhold, Tim Peterson and Drew Gagnon and infielder Jack Reinheimer to their active roster.

Who is Tim Peterson?

In 22 innings with the Mets earlier this season, Peterson has a 7.54 ERA during 19 relief appearances. In his most recent performance, he allowed four runs and five hits in just two innings against the Orioles in mid August.

Drafted late in the 2012, the organization loves to talk about his "bulldog attitude," and the way he "attacks the strike zone," and "attacks hitters," yet scouts say he's a 'finesse guy.'

Peterson throws a 90-mph four-seam fastball, which is weak by MLB standards. However, he does a terrific job changing speeds and throwing to all four corners of the strike zone.

"He's fundamentally sound, does everything and all the little things well, but he just doesn't have the extra pop to put big-league hitters away," a scout with eyes on Peterson once told me.

Who is Eric Hanhold?

Hanhold has yet to pitch in the major leagues, meaning September will likely be a special month for him with the Mets. The 24 year old started this season in Single-A, but quickly moved his way to Las Vegas. However, in Triple-A, he was charged with 15 runs in just 19 innings.

His stats are not impressive, but I'm intrigued to see him pitch. His fastball sits mid-90's. He also throws a hard, upper-80s slider and solid change up. Scouts tell me he has a lot of sink on his pitches, and the ability to run it inside to right-handed hitters, which is probably why he gets the opposition to keep the ball on the ground.

Who is Drew Gagnon?

Gagnon, 28, signed with the Mets as a minor-league free agent this past winter.

In 27 starts for Triple-A, he ended with a 4.57 ERA and 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

He was called on to make an emergency start for the Mets during July, when he allowed six earned runs in 4.2 innings against the Phillies.

Frankly, I don't know what to make of Gagnon. He has an OK fastball and three other OK pitches, relying mostly on contact to get guys out. The thing is, though they always struggle in Vegas, these kind of pitchers can find success in the big leagues if one pitch stands out and they gain command of the rest of their arsenal.

Who is Jake Reinheimer?

Reinheimer, 26, has played mostly shortstop during his career, though he has experience at all infield positions and most recently getting time in the outfield.

In 14 at-bats this season with the Mets, he's hit .286 with a .333 OBP. Released by the D-backs earlier this season, he hit .327 in Triple-A after signing with the Mets.

He's a balanced, spray hitter with a compact swing. There will be times when he's hitless in 20 at bats and fans will wonder why he's on the roster, followed by 10 hits in 20 at bats leaving them wondering why he doesn't start every day.

In the field, he looked to have an above-average arm and quick feet, but he didn't knock anyone over with his range or slick glove. He reads to me like a 25th-man-on-the-roster type of utility guy...

Anyone else?

I've heard it's possible we also see the Mets eventually add pitchers Gerson Bautista and P.J. Conlon, as well as infielder Luis Guillorme, all of whom appeared in games with the big-league team earlier this season.

In particular, it would be good to get another look at Bautista, who was one three young pitchers acquired from the Red Sox for Addison Reed last summer. Bautista had a difficult summer in the minor leagues, not to mention getting smoked for six runs in four innings for the Mets. However, he's still striking guys out, regardless of where he's pitching.

He is a perfect example of a young pitcher that could benefit from being around other big-league relievers and coaches, even if he doesn't pitch, since the opportunity to learn and watch might help him next spring.
