The Mets planned hire of Carlos Beltran as their next manager has had the baseball world buzzing.

Shortly after the news broke, members of the SNY broadcast team, including Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, and Steve Gelbs, shared their thoughts on what Beltran brings to the table as the 22nd manager in club history.

"Well I'm not surprised in the least. I thought Beltran was one of the strong candidates. … This is another line of a young manager with relatively little experience, if not any experience at all. That seems to be the trend."

"Carlos Beltran is one of the great players of his generation. Probably going to be a Hall of Famer, and he's going to have instant gravitas. I think this team is looking for direction. I really feel like it's important for a manager to have leadership qualities and lead the team, and this is a young team, particularly, a young team, I feel, that is ready to turn the corner and have someone with strength that they respect and look up to, so in that regard, I feel like this is a good move."

"My initial reaction was 'Holy cow, that's fantastic.' I don't know if I'll be able to put it into words, but he just carries a cache, Carlos, and I think he is so proven as a player, as all Mets fans know, one of the great switch hitters to every play the game, all of those things. But I just thought with the remaining candidates, that was the best choice and I'm happy he's the next manager."

"His baseball intelligence is through the roof. It always has been, since he was a rookie with the Kansas City Royals. Anyone who's known him since the day he's started until the day he ended bragged about that part of his game. So, he's always had that."

"This is his time and place. I think Carlos saying that he only wanted to interview for the Mets job and that was it goes a long for how the Mets fans and certainly how I feel about the passion he has to manage the Mets. … He has the passion, I'm sure, to be one of the greatest of all time like he was as a player. I wouldn't expect anything less."

"Carlos Beltran wanted this. He went into the Yankees' front office last year to learn this even more so, and I think that if he brings the passion that he clearly brought to his playing career, and that there's no indication he won't bring to this job based on how badly he wanted it, then it has a chance to be a very successful partnership."

"I think that they will respond to him better than they would probably for any other manager, at least at the outset. Especially someone like Carlos Beltran who retired two years ago. I've talked to current players of the last couple of days, and Carlos Beltran immediately has their respect. I can promise you that."
