It all started with a magazine

How exactly did Joe Namath become known as "Broadway Joe" during his career?

In an interview with SNY, Namath said the nickname was coined by offensive lineman Sherman Plunkett

"We were sitting in Shea Stadium in the locker room after practice and the offensive line sat on that side and the quarterbacks and running backs sat on this side," Namath explained. "On our stools that we sat on was the cover of Sports Illustrated with me standing on the cover looking all sharp with the lights of broadway. After ducking a few times from the guys throwing the magazine at me"

"After it calms down a little bit, straight across from me is Jeremy Plunkett, and he's looking at the magazine and looks at me and a big smile breaks out on his face. He said, 'Broadway...Broadway Joe.' That was the first time it came, and if it came from anybody else, I don't know if it would have felt as good."
