But Team USA's executive director Jerry Colangelo chose Kevin Love and Jerami Grant over Randle, despite the latter's much more superior season.

"He was one of our considerations. Especially when some of the injuries took place and we lost a few players., Colangelo said, according to The New York Post.

Colangelo said Randle was "right there," but Love's previous international experience earned him the nod. Randle has not competed internationally since the 2012 U18 FIBA Championships -- he was named to the 2019-20 USA Basketball Men’s National Team and USA World Cup training camp roster, but opted to not play.

Only three USA-born players finished ahead of Randle in the MVP vote, all of which are guards (Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Damian Lillard).

Kevin Durant will be competing in his third Olympics, though, going for the trifecta of Gold Medals after winning them in 2012 and 2016.

Colangelo said Durant's leadership and experience will be a key contributor in Tokyo.

“He’s always had that real enthusiasm for playing USA basketball,” Colangelo said. “He’s been a real warrior and love him as a player and person. The fact he stepped up as he did to commit himself didn’t surprise me. I was very, very pleased. He’s a very important part of our potential success. His leadership is important.’’

The Olympics kick off July 23, with men's basketball tipping off on the 25th. Group practices will begin on July 6.
