While the players rejected the 60-game framework from the league on Monday night, leading commissioner Rob Manfred to put in motion a plan to impose the 2020 MLB season, one key part of the rejected framework could still happen.

The universal DH, which had been a part of the discussions for months, could still be implemented despite the players' rejection of the overall framework, with Jon Heyman reporting that "word is owners are indeed ready to allow" the universal DH in 2020 but not 2021.

In the 60-game framework, the universal DH would have been in place in both 2020 and 2021, players would have been guaranteed $25 million in playoff money, and the playoffs would have been expanded from 10 to 16 teams for the 2020 season, among other elements.

The league, in responding Monday night after the rejection of the 60-game framework, wrote in a press release that the implementation of the season by Manfred would no longer include any of the above.

However, there appears to be wiggle room regarding the universal DH, potentially because it's viewed as being something that protects pitchers in the National League.

When it comes to the universal DH, the Mets -- with Yoenis Cespedes, J.D. Davis, and Dominic Smith expected to be on the roster -- are one of the teams that stands to benefit the most from it in 2020.

In addition to the potential of the universal DH being used in 2020, the league is also planning to use a recent minor league rule that would place a runner on second base at the beginning of each half inning in extra innings, per Heyman.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the league has sought to limit the amount of time players are together during the season, so the potential implementation of the extra inning rule -- which would theoretically lead to games ending faster -- should not come as a surprise.
