Mets RHP Tylor Megill, who has been on the IL since May 12 due to biceps tendinitis, threw off flat ground on Monday as he works toward a return.

The next big step for Megill will be getting back on a mound.

Megill is eligible to come off the IL on May 27, but Mets manager Buck Showalter said last week that Megill would need to make a rehab start before being activated.

The Mets getting Megill back sooner rather than later would be a serious boost for a rotation that is dealing with the loss of Max Scherzer for six-to-eight weeks and is still without Jacob deGrom, who is making progress but not yet on a mound.

At the moment, the Mets are patching two rotation spots. David Peterson returned to the rotation on Monday against the Giants in San Francisco and fired six innings of two-run ball.

The Mets will next need a starter on Wednesday against the Giants, and are expected to give the ball to Thomas Szapucki, who has been pitching well for Triple-A Syracuse after recovering ulnar nerve transposition surgery.
