Mets reliever Trevor May talked on Thursday about the team's manager search and discussed the ongoing MLB lockout.

The manager search is heating up and a decision could come as soon as next week, with Buck Showalter, Joe Espada, Matt Quatraro, Bob Geren, and Brad Ausmus among the candidates.

As far as which candidate he wants the Mets to hire, May wouldn't divulge. But he gave a thoughtful answer on the type of person he'd like as manager.

"For the people that make those decisions -- because again, I just work here -- but for the people that make those decisions, I think it comes down to just having a clear idea of what is gonna be our philosophy moving forward to prevent runs and score runs," May said on Tiki and Tierney on WFAN.

"It's less about the name of somebody and their experience, and it's more about working with the group of people. How cohesive is your group of people? There are people that people have never heard of in organizations all over the place that are extremely good at their jobs because that is something they do really well. They've bought into that philosophy."

Added May:

"It's all about communication and it's all about comfort level with each other and being bought into the same philosophy."

As far as the lockout, May cited the current free agent system as one of the main issues that will need to be figured out before a new CBA is agreed to.

"Team control over baseball players is just twice as long as every other sport," May said. That's always gonna be kind of a starting point when you start to have conversations, and if that needs to be adjusted or not.

"That is generally, in a very, very general sense asking 'does this still work very well?' And I don't think we agree in a lot of ways on if it does or not. That's kind of it."
