We're counting down the Top 10 New York sports stories of 2021, continuing with No. 3 on our list...

Heading into the 2020-21 season, no one expected the Knicks to be a playoff team.

Head coach Tom Thibodeau took over the new regime at Madison Square Garden, spearheaded by president Leon Rose. He believed Thibodeau had the pedigree to take the young group and develop a team that could sustain success for years to come.

Bumps in the road were expected. After all, this was a 21-45 Knicks team the year before.

But this Knicks team didn't care about what happened last year, or the years after the 2012-13 season — their last playoff berth. They bought in to Thibodeau's defense-first system and it paid off.

The Knicks jelled quickly, led by All-Star Julius Randle, and they were clearly the shock of the NBA. After battling through the season, the Knicks found themselves as the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference at 41-31 overall.

New York was supposed to be rebuilding. The team clinched a playoff berth on May 12.

"We knew from the start of the season the goals that we wanted to establish, and we wanted the focus to be on what we were trying to get accomplished each and every day, and we felt that if we did that we would be in this position, to be playing our best at the end and hopefully have a shot at things," Thibodeau said.

"It’s a credit to the team, the way they worked and sacrificed all season long, and I think one of the strengths of the club is their ability to focus and maintain a high concentration and intensity level over the course of a long season with a lot of challenges."

Just like that, the Knicks were focused on playoff basketball. But even more importantly, the city of New York was energized.

There was a buzz leading up to the first Knicks playoff game at The Garden. With city mandates being lifted a bit, MSG sold out for Game 1 against the Atlanta Hawks.

"It's gonna be pretty packed in there, and we're excited about that," Randle said. "Fun, just the energy, all that. We went from no fans to a certain amount to a good amount now, and I think it's perfect timing."

Nerlens Noel added: "It's been electric in there, even at 2,000 or whatever it was. I'm super excited to get however many plus more. I think it's gonna be a great atmosphere for us. I know the fans are gonna bring it at a high level."

Oh, they did.

The crowd was rockin' for Game 1, and since it was the first time most fans were able to sit in the MSG seats in awhile, it was louder than expected. But the Knicks would drop Game 1 because Trae Young went off and hit a clutch floater with seconds left in the fourth to solidify a statement road win for Atlanta.

Game 2 saw a dominating Knicks second half to even the series. However, New York didn't win again after that. But the foundation was set and higher expectation were set for the future.
