So far this offseason, the Rangers have re-signed Vlad Namestnikov, Jimmy Vesey and Cody McLeod, had numerous RFAs accept their qualifying offers and signed defenseman Fredrik Claesson.
The Rangers have around $20 million in cap space depending on roster construction and have long been linked as a team that could possibly take on salary from a team.
The Rangers have been linked to Artemi Panarin as well though it's more likely that they would look to acquire him next summer as a free agent.
Jeff Gorton said that it's "obvious," based upon moves they have made since the trade deadline, that the Rangers want to "" and were looking to add role players in free agency.
While speaking about where the Rangers are, at the draft, Pierre McGuire said that the Rangers intention was to "rebuild with aggression" and noted that both Filip Chytil and Lias Andersson are "tremendous, tremendous players." (NBCSN)
When asked about the players the Rangers drafted in the first round this year, Gorton said " "skill, speed, competitiveness and character are all the things we are trying to look for and rebuild around.
The Rangers still have to sign RFAs Kevin Hayes, Brady Skjei and Ryan Spooner or risk going to arbitration hearings with them in late july or early August.
Adam Rotter: As July turns to August the Rangers will likely have their main focus on getting their three RFAs under contract and then seeing what other moves can be made. They may dip into the UFA market if someone seems interesting, and fits with where they are going, and I'm sure there are still deals to be made. Erik Karlsson is believed to still be holding up the trade market to a degree and while the Rangers are very unlikely to land Karlsson, they could be involved to make money work and also have potential players that could be moved to teams that don't land Karlsson or Jeff Skinner or anyone else rumored about. I expect moves to be made, and while things can happen out of nowhere, at this point things may not start heating up again until around Labor Day.
