While the Giants interviewed Mike McCarthy for their vacant head coaching role, he signed on the dotted line with Cowboys on Monday to become their bench boss. Another potential Giants candidate might also be taken off the board thanks to their NFC East rival.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Richard, already employed by the Cowboys under Jason Garrett, might be brought back into the fold in some role. The exact job title was not specificed by the report. Richard was the first person interviewed for the Giants opening, while McCarthy was the second.

However, NFL Network followed up with a report that Richard and the Cowboys do not yet have a meeting scheduled together to discuss a new job.

The report about Richard potentially staying with the Cowboys comes about after Mike Nolan was already hired as their defensive coordinator under McCarthy. Richard's most recent title with the Cowboys was the passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

Richard completed his interview with the Giants on Thursday, with GM Dave Gettleman saying afterward during an appearance on WFAN that Richard was a "very impressive guy."

According to Gettleman, the Giants have a lot on their plate when it comes to the head coaching search. There are currently seven known candidates, with Mike McCarthy expected to be next up to interview on Friday.

Richard has been with the Cowboys for the past two seasons, but made his way into the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, and particularly with Pete Carroll, who brought Richard with him from USC back in 2010.

Cowboys passing coordinator/defensive backs coach Kris Richard is throwing his hat into the Giants head coach vacancy ring, it was reported on Monday evening.

Richard still awaits the fate of his current head coach Jason Garrett, who as of Monday night has not been relieved of his duties.

After playing in the NFL from 2002-2007, Richard joined USC as a graduate assistant in 2008 and stayed there for two seasons.

Once he made the jump with Carroll to Seattle, Richard started as an assistant defensive backs coach before being named the cornerbacks coach in 2011.

Richard is credited with being a big part in establishing the "Legion of Boom" in Seattle, after taking the title of defensive backs coach from 2012-2014.

This rise in defensive prowess led to Richard being named the Seahawks' defensive coordinator from 2015-2017 before winding up in Dallas.

The Cowboys however, were tied for last place in interceptions this season, a large mark down from the "Legion of Boom" days.
