In one of his at-bats against the Yankees last weekend, Mets LF/DH Yoenis Cespedes started running out a grounder at full speed before shifting into a slower gear. On Tuesday, Cespedes explained why.

"That was intentional at the time. The trainers have been telling me that as long as I run at about 80 percent, I'm fine," Cespedes explained during a Zoom with reporters. "At first reaction once I hit the ball, I wanted to go out fast out of the box. But then I remembered what they told me, so that's why I kind of slowed down."

And therein lies the uncertainty when it comes to Cespedes, his recovered lower body injuries, and how exactly he'll fit in on the Mets in 2020.

Cespedes, who said he "felt a lot better than I thought I would feel" during the exhibition games, said he feels "equally as confident" when it comes to his comfort level to serve as the DH or play left field.

But for Opening Day, he'll be the DH.

"From the conversations that we had, at least for the first game -- for Opening Day -- I'll be the DH," Cespedes said.

That Cespedes will start out as the DH should come as no surprise, and it likely means that J.D. Davis will be in left field, with Brandon Nimmo in center and Michael Conforto in right.

If Cespedes (the Mets' most natural left fielder) is able to play full games in left field -- even if it's only once in a while -- it will open up a number of interesting scenarios for New York, including the ability to use Davis at DH.

But with Mets trainers telling Cespedes to stay around 80 percent effort while running, it's fair to wonder just how much he might be able to provide in left field right now.
