On Thursday, Giants GM Dave Gettleman talked to The Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio, and answered some lingering questions as the season recently came to an end and the team begins its search for a new head coach.

Who made the call to fire Pat Shurmur?

"That was not my call," Gettleman said. "It came from above."

Gettleman was then asked how much say Steve Tisch has compared to John Mara.

"They're co-owners, and they discuss everything," Gettleman said.

Who is in charge of hiring a new head coach?

"It will be Steve (Tisch) and John (Mara)," Gettleman said. "And I will be involved as well as Kevin Abrams."

After that, the follow up question was how the hiring process for Pat Shurmur went in comparison to the current process.

"It was the same set up," Gettleman said.

Was your job in jeopardy too?

"Yes, of course," Gettleman said. "He (Shurmur) didn't win enough. This is professional sports."

On trying to win and rebuild at the same time

"I thought we could do both at the same time," Gettleman said. "I was wrong. It's tough to do. It's not easy."

Do you feel stronger about Daniel Jones now than on draft day?

"Yes, really and truly," Gettleman said. "For him to handle everything the way he did. In his first game he brings us to a come-from-behind win, he's won a game in overtime. He's done things that no other rookie quarterback has done, behind an offensive line that was inconsistent, and a run game that was inconsistent. He's terrific for this market, he's mentally and physically tough."

"You can talk to people all day long, you can watch him play football, but until they're in your building, you don't know about the mental resiliency and toughness," Gettleman continued. "And he's got it."

Did winning two games at the end of the season and hurting NFL Draft position upset you?

"Absolutely not," Gettleman said. "We're trying to build that culture piece downstairs, and when you're happy about losing, what message are you sending? We want our guys fighting hard every Sunday, Monday, or Thursday. The goal is to win."

The Giants beat the Miami Dolphins in Week 15 and the Washington Redskins in Week 16, hurting their draft spot by likely missing out on Ohio State DE Chase Young. The Giants will have the No. 4 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft at the end of April.

Was trading for Leonard Williams a bad move?

"No, I don't feel that way at all," Gettleman said. "This was a chance to acquire a healthy 26-year-old defensive lineman with a lot of versatility and solid production. The value was there for a 3rd and 5th round pick."

Williams was acquired from the Jets on Oct. 28, 2019. In eight games with the team, he recorded 26 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and 0.5 sacks.

Gettleman will need to re-sign Williams if he wants him on the Giants next season, but whether or not that happens is unknown.
