Sandy Anderson is likely to return to the Mets in some capacity as part of the ownership change, SNY has learned. It likely will not be as general manager.
Alderson’s new role is unclear and is possibly still being worked out. It is also unclear how it will affect current GM Brodie Van Wagenen.
Alderson was the GM of the Mets from 2011, succeeding Omar Minaya at the position before stepping down in 2018. He went on a leave of absence on June 26, as he required surgery for cancer that reoccurred. Alderson had already underwent chemotherapy dating back to 2015.

Steve Cohen would be the man bringing Alderson back to Flushing if his agreed-to deal with the Wilpon and Katz families to purchase 95 percent of the Mets is approved by the other MLB owners. Cohen needs 23 of the 29 other owners to approve the deal, which will likely be in November. While some owners are not thrilled with the deal, as SNY reported on Tuesday, it is believed Cohen will ultimately be approved.
The word around Cohen was that he would rather add baseball operations folk than subtract this offseason. As SNY's Jim Duquette first suggested on Baseball Night in New York on Monday, Cohen could possibly retain Van Wagenen as GM and layer someone over him.
