Randle led the NBA in minutes per game last season (37). The All-Star is under contract in New York for the next five seasons. So it’s in the Knicks’ best interest to keep him fresh/healthy over that span, which may mean lowering his minutes. To do that, they’ll need consistency from the backup power forward. That’s one reason why Toppin’s play is pivotal in 2021-22.

SHOOTING

“For me, he needs to shoot the three better next season to start out. He couldn’t get out (in transition like he did in college) so he’s going to need to become more of a threat from out there. I think his form wavered a bit (over the course of the season). You’d like to see more consistency there.”

Toppin shot 30 percent from behind the arc last season and 48 percent overall. Among forwards, Toppin ranked in the 29^th percentile in effective field-goal percentage (per Cleaning The Glass).

His shooting numbers were better when he shared the court with Derrick Rose. With Rose back in New York (on a three-year contract), Toppin should continue to reap those benefits in the coming seasons.

POSITIONAL DEFENSE

“Especially early on (last season), he looked like he wasn’t sure where he needed to be on defense. That’s probably why (Thibodeau) gave him a quick hook (in a few games last season). I kind of expected that coming out of college but he needs to improve laterally on that end to compete. (The Knicks) were great (on defense) with him on the court. But they lost (Reggie Bullock and Elfrid Payton), so there is probably less margin for error (for Toppin).”

Toppin ranked 59^th among forwards in ESPN’s real defensive real plus-minus. He ranked in the 26^th percentile in defensive versatility, per Crafted NBA. Those numbers aren’t pretty. But it wasn’t all bad.

Tracking numbers show that Toppin was solid around the rim. He ranked in the 93^rd percentile in rim defense, per Crafted NBA.
