The Mets and Pete Alonso continue to negotiate, and hope to find progress in the near future.
But Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, is strongly denying a report that he is using former first baseman Prince Fielder’s nine-year, $214 million deal with Detroit in 2012 as a point of reference to Alonso.
"A 10-year-old contract …. [is] not relevant to the current Alonso negotiation," Boras told SNY on Friday morning.
The Mets like Alonso and are comfortable signing him to a shorter-term deal with a high average annual value and opt-outs. Before hiring Boras, Alonso turned down a seven-year, $158 million offer from the Mets.
If he signs elsewhere, they are most likely to emphasize internal youth and positional flexibility on the infield.
