The Rangers announced on Thursday that Jim Schoenfeld, the team's senior vice president and assistant general manager, had stepped down after 17 years with the organization. This comes on the heels of Glen Sather walking away as team president.

"In nearly two decades with the Rangers, Jim made an impact on every level of the organization," Sather, who will transition to a senior advisor role once a new president is hired, said in a press release. "His tireless efforts and contributions were vital to the extended run of success we experienced during his tenure in New York."

Schoenfeld, 66, started with the Rangers in 2002 as an assistant coach. Throughout his time with the Rangers he was also the general manager of their AHL club and the head coach of the AHL club in addition to assistant general manager of the NHL team.

A longtime defenseman with the Sabres, Schoenfeld was a head coach with the Sabres, Devils, Capitals and Coyotes, accruing a regular-season record of 256-246-78. In his first year as Devils coach in 1987-88, he led them to the Prince of Wales conference final.

Schoenfeld is most remembered for an incident occuring after Game 3 of that conference final when he and referee Don Koharski got into a shouting match. Koharski fell but thought he was pushed. Koharski says he hopes the incident was on tape, and Schoenfeld replied, "Good, 'cause you fell you fat pig. Have another doughnut! Have another doughnut!"
