The Rangers have named Jacob Trouba their next team captain — the 28th in team history.

The last Rangers captain was Ryan McDonagh, from 2014 to 2015 and 2017 to 2018.

"Since he joined the Rangers, Jacob has consistently displayed all of the qualities we want in a leader on and off the ice," Rangers president and GM Chris Drury said in a statement. "As we look to take the next step as an organization, he is a role model for all of our players to follow and the perfect choice to be our captain."

Said head coach Gerard Gallant:

"Right away when I got here, it was clear that Jacob had a certain presence in the locker room and among his teammates that exemplify what you need out of a captain. With where our team is at and where we want to be, he is the right person to lead us there."

Trouba, 28, was acquired by the Rangers before the 2019-20 season, and has been one of their leaders since.

"It’s a privilege to be a Ranger and play in this city. I definitely don’t take it for granted to call this city home and build my life here," Trouba said on Tuesday afternoon. "It’s a place that means a lot to me, and I believe in this group and the group of players we have. I’m just very grateful for this opportunity and look forward to leading this team."

Along with Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin, Barclay Goodrow, and Ryan Strome, Trouba was one of six alternate captains during the 2021-22 season after Gallant chose to not name a captain.

"Anyone who’s been around our team for the last few seasons I think certainly understands the impact Jacob has had on our group day to day, day in, day out, on ice, off ice, game days or practice days. He’s a terrific leader and we think he’d be a great Ranger captain for years to come," Drury said at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon.

"Jake has basically been doing the job for a least a couple of seasons, and we just felt like it was appropriate and now was the time, and we’re excited to see the 'C' on him, that’s for sure."
