Blake Wheeler spent the past 13 years of his impressive NHL career serving as a leader both on and off the ice for the Winnipeg Jets.

The former captain was bought out of the final year of his contract this offseason, though, allowing him to reach free agency, where he ultimately decided to sign with the Rangers on a low-cost one-year deal.

Just two weeks into their season, Wheeler and the Rangers set out on a five-game road trip that concluded on Monday night with a stop in Winnipeg, marking an emotional return for the 37-year-old.

“It was pretty crazy, it was a day I’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” he told reporters postgame. “I really appreciate everything the organization put together. We feel really special and grateful for our time here.”

Wheeler had a large group of friends and family donning his No. 17 sweater in a suite in the arena they used to call home. It didn't take long for them to see him as head coach Peter Laviolette sent his line out for the opening face-off.

Then about halfway through the first period, he was greeted by a large standing ovation from the Winnipeg faithful after receiving an emotional video tribute.

“Getting an ovation like that, it feels great to know that you’ve made an impact,” he said. “It’s pretty crazy how time flies, this community and this town and this organization has been such a big part of our lives and it will continue to be.”

“He’s such a great person and a great family man, you can tell that the fans really care about him,” Laviolette added. “He was such a big part of the Winnipeg Jets culture, it was nice for him to get a tribute like that.”

Wheeler has gotten off to a bit of a slow start in his Ranger tenure, having not recorded a point over his first nine games. On Monday night, though, he had a bit more jump, recording four shots on goal for the second straight game while also creating scoring chances.

That doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the veteran said earlier in the day that he’s beginning to feel more like himself of late, and he's hoping it's a sign of things to come.

“The first six games I felt a bit lost out there,” he said. “The last week I’ve felt really good again. I love being out there and feeling like I can play and contribute. Once you get going things start going your way.”

While Wheeler's been struggling, the Rangers as a team have been dominating, winning five straight contests. Perhaps Monday’s return to the familiar confines of the Canada Life Center will help spark a return to form for the veteran winger.
