The Rangers saw their losing streak extended as they were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Here are some takeaways...

- With two of their key contributors Filip Chytil and Chris Kreider remaining out of the starting lineup due to upper-body injuries, it was the Rangers’ depth forwards who stepped up and provided them with a bit of a spark in this one.

- After Carolina jumped out to an early lead on a Jack Drury odd-angle goal, New York’s fourth line pinned the Canes in their zone and Jimmy Vesey eventually found Johnny Brodzinski in front of the net before he whipped a wrister by the glove of Spencer Martin.

- The Canes would retake the lead early in the second period on a power-play goal, but the Rangers answered right back again, as rookie Brett Berard snipped home his first career goal to even things up. The youngster has provided a nice spark on both ends of the ice with points in each of his first two pro games while skating alongside Mika Zibanejad and Will Cuylle on New York’s revamped second line.

- Carolina dominated the majority of the second period following the equalizer, but after New York stole some momentum with a big penalty kill, Adam Edstrom buried his second goal of the season to give the Rangers their first lead of the night. The rookie also recorded an assist on the Brodzinski, giving him a two-point night.

- As has been the case all season, Igor Shesterkin was doing everything he could to keep the Rangers in front, but the All-Star goaltender was beaten on a bad goal as Carolina’s Jesperi Kotkaniemi evened things up at three with a wraparound midway through the third period.

- Vincent Trocheck took a bad penalty a few minutes later, and the Hurricanes made sure to make him pay, as rookie Jackson Blake whipped home his seventh goal of the season to secure the come-from-behind victory. That marked the first time this season that New York allowed two power-play goals in the same game.

- On a positive note, the Rangers didn’t give up 40+ shots for the first time during their losing streak.
