Alonso, who mashed a go-ahead, two-run home run Tuesday to put the Mets ahead, leads the majors with nine homers and 22 RBI after the seventh inning, and he's hitting .409 with a 1.516 OPS after the seventh. Overall, he has 11 homers and 31 RBI. ... Alonso's 11 homers are already tied for second-most in the first half by a rookie in franchise history along with Ike Davis (2010) and Benny Agbayani (1999.) Who is starting for the Mets?
RHP Wilmer Font (1-0, 5.79 ERA,) who is making his Mets debut after they acquired him Monday from the Rays. In his last appearance on May 1, Font set season-highs with three innings and 59 pitches, allowing one run. Font is primarily a reliever but has experience starting as part of the Rays' "opener" experiment. He ended up getting stretched out enough to throw as many as 80 pitches last season, and the Mets are targeting 75 pitches for him Wednesday.
Who is starting for the Padres?
LHP Matt Strahm (1-2, 3.03 ERA), who has been pitching quite well after a rough first start of the season. He has a 1.80 ERA in his five starts since, and over his last four starts he has not issued a walk in 25 innings while striking out 23 batters.
Upcoming schedule
The Mets are off Thursday after flying home from the West Coast. They return to Citi Field Friday to start a three-game series against the Marlins. RHP Zack Wheeler (2-2, 4.64) will start for the Mets while Miami will send out RHP Pablo López (2-4, 4.03.) Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard are scheduled to stay on normal rest and pitch Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
