Pete Alonso provided the only offense for the Mets on Thursday night against the Houston Astros, launching a solo home run to left-center field in the top of the sixth inning.

But with Jacob deGrom’s perfect three-inning start, Alonso’s blast was the only run the Mets needed.

“I don’t think there’s really words for it. He was electric,” Alonso said of deGrom. “It was super fun to watch, but it got really boring because there wasn’t really much action out there. That’s exactly how you draw it up when Jake deGrom’s on the mound just mowing people down. I mean, wow. He looked like a Hall of Famer out there.”

Alonso has been having a tremendous spring, as the first baseman is now slashing .313/.450/.813 with a pair of home runs, looking to rebound of what some considered a down year following his breakout 2019 rookie season.

But the 26-year-old also made some headlines earlier this week, when he – along with Jeff McNeil – elected to renew their contracts for the 2021 season rather than agreeing to terms on a new deal with the team for the upcoming season.

“Right now as a 0-to-3 player, I just wanted to exercise my right, and right now I just thought it would be best for me, best for my career, to exercise my right to renew and not sign the contract that they offered,” Alonso explained.

“Absolutely no bitterness at all. Right now, there’s very little that I can do because I’m a 0-to-3 player, and this is one of those circumstances where this is the only right I have, and I thought it’d be best to exercise that right.”

Alonso always seems to have a positive mindset, but he’s spoken particularly highly of this year’s Mets, as the team comes into the new season with high expectations.

After Thursday’s win, Alonso explained why he believes this group of Mets is so special.

“There are so many guys in this lineup who are just unbelievably talented and have had sustained success in the big leagues, but I think we have a really special group. It would be great to win for everybody in our locker room, because I really do think that we have a good group,” Alonso said. “We have a good, strong core, we’ve made some great additions and everybody’s kind of just fit in and gelled extremely well.

“I’m just looking forward to kind of see where we’re at as we progress through spring training, but I think come Opening Day and come the regular season, it’s going to be really special. I think that we have a lot of good mojo going, a lot of momentum, a lot of really good things have been happening here, and we keep progressing and getting better every day.

“Winning is fun, and all the guys have worked their asses off, and we’re going to continue to do that and get better. So, I think it’s going to be a really fun year.”

Alonso was also asked about the Mets celebrating as if they won the World Series after a recent round of fielding drills, and with a smile on his face, Alonso gave a perfect answer about that moment.

“You gotta practice it if it’s gonna happen,” Alonso said.

“For me, I think practicing it is a good thing because you’re kind of thinking that way and you’re preparing for it, and that’s a tangible way to kind of prepare and think about it going forward, because that’s the ultimate goal. Yeah, we were just having some fun, but in all seriousness we know that there’s going to be a lot of work, a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. But that’s the goal and we’re having fun, but you’ve got to have a vision and make it a goal before it turns into reality, and I think that’s kind of what the whole message was.”
