Brandon Nimmo hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Mets past the Phillies, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Citi Field.

Things you should know about tonight's game...

1) Nimmo's walk-off was the Mets' third in six games and second of the series. Jose Bautista hit a walk-off grand slam against the Rays last Friday and Wilmer Flores beat the Phillies in the opener of Monday's doubleheader. Amed Rosario began the two-out rally with a double followed by a Jose Reyes walk.

2) Jacob deGrom tossed eight scoreless innings to lower his Major League-best ERA to 1.68. The right-hander allowed five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. It marked the 14th time in 19 starts he has allowed one earned run or fewer. He has a 1.44 ERA in 10 no-decisions this season.

3) Amed Rosario doubled with two outs in the 10th to start the Mets' winning rally. He also singled and walked to reach base safely three times for the second straight game. Rosario was the only player on either team with a multi-hit game.

4) Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect ninth and Robert Gsellman (6-2) earned the win with a scoreless 10th.

There really is only one reason to watch the Mets right now and he was standing on the mound to begin the game Wednesday night. In his final start before the All-Star break and his second All-Star Game appearance, Jacob deGrom tossed yet another scoreless effort without anything to show for it. Gary Cohen said it best at the end of the seventh: "Groundhog Day." The right-hander continues to dominate in a fashion not seen around these parts -- or many others for that matter -- since Dwight Gooden's other-worldly 1985 season. It's even more impressive when you consider how frustrated deGrom must be out on the mound.

The final result was a "Happy Recap" for the Mets, thanks to Brandon Nimmo's walk-off homer in the 10th. If deGrom is one of the only reasons to watch the Mets, it's only fair to say that Nimmo is a runner-up. No matter what the situation is, it's impossible not to root for this kid. As a fan, you want the win, no matter how it happens, but it's a little more enjoyable when Nimmo plays a part in it.

Back to deGrom, there aren't enough superlatives to describe how good of a pitcher this guy is. Nor are there enough words to describe how wasteful it is to have a stud like deGrom on a team that is bumbling its way to its worst season in 25 years. As Mets fans, we're fortunate to watch a true artist work every five days ... but doing so in front of a half-empty Citi Field with nothing but personal glory on the line is wrong on so many levels. The fans and deGrom deserve so much better. That trading a player of this caliber might be the best course of action speaks volumes to how bad this organization truly is right now...

News and notes...

The Mets improved to 3-4 on their homestand with four games remaining against the Nationals. New York is 2-17-6 in its last 25 series since the beginning of May.

DeGrom surrendered one run or less for the 58th time in 126 career starts. He owns a 1.28 ERA in 15 starts since April 21, during which he's struck out 119 batters and walked 24.

The Phillies went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position against deGrom, who has limited the opposition to a .122 mark (10-for-82) in those situations this season.

The Mets' bullpen allowed one earned run in 14 2/3 innings (0.61 ERA) during the series.

Prior to the game, the Mets optioned Drew Gagnon and Kevin Kaczmarski to Triple-A Las Vegas. They recalled Jacob Rhame and purchased the contract of Matt den Dekker.

What's next...

The Mets (37-53) begin their final series of the first half against the Nationals (46-46) on Thursday night at Citi Field at 7 p.m. on SNY.

Steven Matz (4-6, 3.31 ERA/4.65 FIP, 81 K, 1.227 WHIP) kicks things off the four-game set after a solid outing against Tampa Bay Saturday. Despite suffering the loss, the southpaw allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings to lower his ERA to 2.78 over his last 12 starts. Matz is 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA in six career starts against the Nationals. He's surrendered four runs -- three earned -- in nine innings (two starts) against Washington this season.

Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.33 ERA/2.60 FIP, 177 Ks, 0.893 WHIP) gets the nod for the Nats in what is probably a precursor to his start in next week's All-Star game. The right-hander picked up the win after surrendering four runs over seven innings against the Marlins Saturday. It is his only victory in his last six starts despite owning a 3.15 ERA in that span. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 8-4 with a 2.23 ERA in 15 career appearances (14 starts) against the Mets. He has not faced New York this season.
