The Mets pounded out 19 hits and scored nine times in the sixth inning en route to a 16-5 win over the Orioles on Wednesday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Things you should know about tonight's game...

1) Nimmo reached safely six times and finished a career-best 5-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored while falling a homer shy of the cycle. Todd Frazier extended his hitting streak to eight games with three hits and homered while driving in a season-high four runs. Kevin Plawecki's grand slam capped the Mets' nine-run sixth, which featured 12 batters, four hits, four walks and a hit by pitch.

2) Every member of New York's lineup had a hit except Michael Conforto. Jose Reyes doubled, tripled and scored twice. He and Austin Jackson both tripled in the fourth inning. Wilmer Flores slugged a two-run homer in the ninth. Jack Reinheimer made his Mets debut by pinch-running for Jose Bautista in the sixth inning. He singled in the eighth for his first Major League hit.

3) Zack Wheeler needed 95 pitches to complete five innings but allowed just one run on five hits and two walks. The right-hander struck out three and extended his winning streak to a career-high tying six games. Wheeler (8-6) has a 1.41 ERA in his last five starts and has surrendered three runs in his last 29 innings (0.93 ERA).

Believe it or not, there have been a few positives for the Mets in what is an otherwise dismal season. Zack Wheeler's emergence sits towards the front of that short list.

Although not as crisp or efficient as he has been over the last two months, the right-hander was able to escape trouble several times while holding an admittedly putrid Orioles club to one run over five innings. In doing so, Wheeler lowered his ERA over his last 14 starts to 2.82 -- 1.41 in his last five -- and continues to emerge as the potential top-flight starter the Mets thought he could be. His development provides the Mets another possible trade option in the offseason, should the next GM decide to go that route. If not, he gives the Mets a legitimate a three-headed monster at the head of the rotation along with Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom.

It's easy to forget that Wheeler is still a relative baby developmentally. He debuted in June 2013 and turned in a strong first full season the following year. But Tommy John surgery and a lengthy and cautious rehab process followed by a stress fracture in his arm last season limited him to less than four months of competitive action between the end of 2014 and the middle of 2017.

Is Wheeler as good as he's pitched this summer? That's hard to say, but the high-octane fastball, solid slider, emerging changeup and the new split-finger have certainly given him an expanded repertoire. More importantly, staying healthy and taking the mound every fifth day has given him the experience he was so clearly lacking. And to think he began the year in Triple-A...

News and notes...

The 14 runs and nine-run inning both matched season highs for the Mets. They beat the Padres, 14-2, on April 29 and put up a nine-spot to rally past the Nationals on April 18.

Nimmo has reached base in nine consecutive plate appearances going back to Tuesday's game. He became the first Met since Flores in 2016 to reach base six times in one game.

Frazier is hitting .393 (13-for-33) with two homers and nine RBIs during his hitting streak. It was his first four-RBI game since he drove in six on May 9, 2016.

Plawecki's four RBIs matched a career high set on June 24.

Frazier's home run as a designated hitter was the Mets' 41st from the position since Interleague play began in 1997, the most by any National League team

Wheeler won six straight decisions from July 6-Aug. 20, 2014. He had won five of his previous 35 starts prior to his current winning streak.

What's next...

The Mets (51-67) travel to Philadelphia where the Phillies (64-53) and a doubleheader awaits them on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park at 4 p.m. on Facebook. The second game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener and air on SNY.

Corey Oswalt (1-2, 5.03 ERA/5.06 FIP, 26 K, 1.068 WHIP) and Steven Matz (5-9, 4.35 ERA/4.74 FIP, 99 K, 1.337 WHIP) will open the five-game series, which concludes with the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, home of the Little League World Series.

The Phillies yet to announce a starting pitcher for either game.
