The Mets are trading Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the Chicago Cubs, according to SNY MLB Insider Chelsea Janes.

In exchange, the Mets will receive infielder Jefferson Rojas, ranked as the Cubs' No. 2 overall prospect.

Rojas, 21, has played all over the infield, and he's posted a .799 OPS this season with Double-A Knoxville.

Holmes was off to a phenomenal start this year, with a 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over his first nine outings, but he suffered a freak injury on May 15 against the Yankees when a comebacker broke his fibula.

That injury caused a disastrous domino effect for the Mets' rotation, which sagged due to the ineffectiveness (and eventual trade) of David Peterson, the injury and ineffectiveness of Kodai Senga, the early struggles of Sean Manaea, and the inability of Jonah Tong to take the next step.

While Holmes isn't definitely headed for free agency after this season, it will be a relative shock if he doesn't decline the $12 million player option he holds for 2027.

Taylor, who was acquired from the Brewers in December of 2023 along with Adrian Houser in exchange for minor league pitcher Coleman Crow, had a strong season for the Mets in 2024 -- posting a .701 OPS in 130 games and playing plus defense in center field.

The veteran outfielder spent time on the IL earlier this season with a hip injury, but he's been on a power surge since returning, hitting seven home runs with 14 RBI in 24 games during that span.

David Stearns and the Mets have already been very active ahead of the 6:00 p.m. deadline, trading away A.J. Minter, Huascar Brazoban, Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley, and Freddy Peralta in recent days.
