The Mets are trading J.D. Davis to the San Francisco Giants in a deal for right-handed hitting DH/1B/OF Darin Ruf, reports SNY's Andy Martino.

Along with Davis, the Mets are sending LHP Thomas Szapucki and RHP prospects Carson Seymour and Nick Zwack to San Francisco in the deal, reports Joel Sherman of The New York Post.

The 36-year-old Ruf, who is under contract through the 2023 season and whose deal has a club option for 2024, has hit very well against left-handers this season and could become part of a platoon with lefty-hitting Daniel Vogelbach.

Ruf will make $3 million in 2023, and the club option for 2024 is worth $3.5 million.

If the Mets do indeed use Ruf in a platoon with Vogelbach, they could possibly get the best out of both of them.

Ruf has slashed .252/.364/.523 with nine home runs in 132 plate appearances this season against lefties.

For his career, Ruf has hit .282/.379/.550 with 39 homers in 304 games against left-handers.

Davis, who is under team control through 2024, struggled this season for the Mets -- especially in the power department.

In 66 games, Davis hit .238/.324/.359 with just four home runs in 207 plate appearances.

Despite making lots of hard contact, the results did not follow for Davis, who has also struggled to catch up with high velocity while striking out 66 times this season.
