The Mets couldn't sweep the weekend Subway Series, falling to the Yankees in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader, 4-2.
Here are the takeaways...
1. Corey Oswalt ran into some trouble in the second inning, allowing a leadoff double to Luke Voit and a bunt single to Rougned Odor. With runners on the corners, Gio Urshela squeaked out a three-run short-porch special that put the Yanks up 3-0. It was hardly by the fault of Oswalt, though, as it was a pitch at the letters away. Other than that, Oswalt had a decent night, as he gave the Mets four innings in a spot start and allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four.
2. The Mets were kept at bay against Nestor Cortes -- James McCann and Dominic Smith were the only Mets to record a hit off him. But upon Darren O’Day entering the game, Pete Alonso went deep -- his second blast in as many games in Sunday’s doubleheader - to put the Mets within one. O’Day then walked McCann and Michael Conforto. But the Mets couldn’t tack on any more, and trailed by one heading into the bottom of the fourth.
3. Aaron Loup came in the game in the fifth inning, and walked two batters. That prompted Luis Rojas to go to Miguel Castro to mop up the mess, but a wild pitch brought in Brett Gardner to score to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead.
4. Trevor May came on to pitch the sixth, and tossed his ninth-consecutive scoreless outing.
5. The Mets couldn't find much success against Chad Green, though, as the righty tossed three perfect innings and struck out six, including his final four batters faced (with an immaculate seventh inning), to preserve the victory.
