The Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 3-1 on Thursday night at Clover Park.

Here are some takeaways...

- Jose Quintana made his second start of the spring and he faced some early traffic but fared much better than his first outing. The southpaw allowed a leadoff single in the top of the first, but the baserunner was quickly erased on a Francisco Alvarez caught stealing -- more on him later.

Washington quickly put two baserunners on in the second, via a single and hit by pitch, but Quintana rebounded nicely with a pair of strikeouts and got out of the inning with just one run allowed. He followed that up with an easy third inning, finishing his night with just one unearned run while striking out six.

- The regulars in the Mets' bullpen were on full display in this one, as Adam Ottavino made his spring debut and he was helped out by two more Alvarez caught stealings in a scoreless inning of work. Newly signed arms Jake Diekman and Jorge Lopez, both of whom allowed homers in their first outing, bounced back nicely with a scoreless frame of their own.

Shintaro Fujinami also made his highly-anticipated spring debut, after being away from the team due to a personal issue, and he needed just 10 pitches to get through a perfect inning of work. The righty generated two grounders and a flyout, but most importantly, six of his ten pitches were for strikes.

- Alvarez not only enjoyed himself a strong day behind the plate, throwing out three attempted base stealers, but he also demolished a 408-foot two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. The 22-year-old now has two long balls and an impressive 1.188 OPS through 12 spring at-bats.

- Brett Baty, who is hitting just .190 with one extra-base hit through 12 spring at-bats, dropped down a perfect bunt to beat the shift for a hit ahead of Alvarez's homer.

- Brandon Nimmo enjoyed himself a nice day at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles out of the leadoff spot in his third spring game.
