The Mets didn't have enough on offense to overcome a first inning grand-slam, falling to the Miami Marlins, 6-3 on Monday night.
Here are some takeaways from Monday's game
- Tylor Megill got off to a rough start, letting up back-to-back singles and then a catcher's interference by James McCann loaded the bases with no one out. Lewis Brinson launched a grand-slam to right-center field to put the Marlins up 4-0.
- Javier Baez drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second inning, and moved to third base on J.D. Davis' line drive single. Baez would score on a wild pitch by Jesus Luzardo, making it a 4-1 game. Brandon Drury delivered a two-out double that scored Davis as the Mets cut the lead in half.
- Pete Alonso crushed a line drive homer to left-center field on the first pitch in the top of the third inning to make it a 4-3 game. The ball was hit 109 mph with just a 22 degree launch angle, showing off Alonso's true power. Baez then stumbled to first base after hitting a ground ball, appearing to get hurt trying to reach safely. However, he remained in the game at short.
- The Marlins made it 5-3 on Isan Diaz' RBI double to right field in the bottom of the third inning. Megill would then settle in a bit, getting 1-2-3 fourth and fifth innings, retiring his last eight batters. His final line against the Marlins was 5.0 IP, six hits, four earned runs, zero walks and four strikeouts. Megill's ERA is now at 2.68 after eight big league starts.
- Miguel Rojas hit a leadoff triple off Trevor May in the bottom of the eighth inning. After a walk to put runners at the corners, Brinson reached first on a throwing error by Baez, as the Marlins went up 6-3. May intentionally walked Diaz to load the bases and then retired the next three batters to escape the jam.
- Michael Conforto came in to pinch-hit in the ninth and doubled down the right field line to snap an 0-for-13 streak. Pillar grounded out for the first out, moving Conforto to third base. Alonso lined out to right field, but it wasn't deep enough to score the run from third.
