Pete Alonso ripped a pair of home runs and Noah Syndergaard battled through six inning, but Edwin Diaz blew the save in the 9-8 loss to the Dodgers. >> Box score
Seven things to know about Wednesday's game
1) Edwin Diaz entered the game in the ninth with a three-run lead, but he gave up back-to-back home runs to Joc Pederson and Max Muncy, followed by back-to-back doubles to Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger to tie the game. Eventually, the Dodgers loaded the bases with nobody out and Alex Verdugo delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly.
2) Alonso got the Mets started early, hitting a laser-beam home run to right-center off of Dodgers' starter Walker Buehler. The Polar Bear's 18th home run of the season gave the Mets a 2-0 lead before Syndergaard even took the mound. Then, with the game tied at 3-3 in the fifth, Alonso broke the tie with his second two-run homer of the game (19th of the season). Thirty-one of Alonso's 51 hits on the season have gone for extra bases.
3) Adeiny Hechavarria stayed hot on Wednesday. He doubled home Todd Frazier in the top of the second inning to put the Mets up 3-0. Later in the sixth, he singled Frazier home to extend the Mets' lead to 6-3. He entered the game batting .280 (7-25) with five runs, two doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, two walks and a 1.053 OPS over his last seven games.
4) The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Syndergaard had his struggles holding onto that lead. Thor allowed three-straight doubles in the top of the second, allowing the Dodgers to get back within a run. Turner then tied the game for the Dodgers in the third with an RBI single. Syndergaard battled back though, fighting through six innings while throwing 116 pitches. He left the game with a 6-3 lead.
5) Carlos Gomez found some redemption on Wednesday. After being unable to come up with a long fly ball off the bat of Corey Seager, Gomez rebounded and made a laser of a throw to nab Seager out at third base. Gomez was thrown out at third base earlier in the series by Bellinger.
6) Amed Rosario greeted Dodgers' reliever Julio Urias with a solo blast to start the top of the seventh inning, pushing the Mets' lead to 7-3. The very next batter, Dominic Smith, also took Urias deep to almost the exact same spot.
7) For the first time this season, Alonso and Smith were in the Mets' starting lineup together. The move paid off, as the pair combined for three home runs.
