Six Takeaways from Wednesday's game
1) The comeback kids struck again on Wednesday. With a four-run final inning, the Mets rallied to beat the Rockies, 7-4. Wilson Ramos pinch hit to start the rally with a walk, then JD Davis and Brandon Nimmo singled, the second which of which tied the game at four.
The ensuing at-bat saw the Mets load the bases as Jeff McNeil walked. Excitement filled the air for the Mets as Pete Alonso then walked to the plate, but instead of swinging, he walked on four-straight pitches, which brought in the game-winning run. Later in the inning, Robinson Cano hit into a sloppy looking double play, but it also scored a run, as did a shocking at-bat. Seth Lugo's first time hitting this year saw him knock an RBI single, to bring the score to 7-4.
2) The revitalized Mets bullpen came to play as well. Jeurys Familia was brought in to get the final out of the sixth inning and did so with a strikeout. Brad Brach then had a clean seventh inning with another strikeout. Along with his surprise hit, in a less surprising fashion, Lugo dominated on the bump. He allowed one hit in the ninth as Alonso missed on a diving effort, but allowed no runs and had three strikeouts in the final two inning. The bullpen started their day by retiring the first eight batters it faced.
3) Before the bullpen got in there, it was Noah Syndergaard's day. The Mets opted to start Rene Rivera behind the plate amid reports that Syndergaard does not want to pitch to Ramos. That didn't help though, as Syndergaard allowed four runs on 10 hits and two walks in 5.2 innings of work. Syndergaard had six strikeouts. The Mets were hesitant to start Rivera because of his bat, or at least because of Ramos' good offense. He was 0-for-3 on the day. Syndergaard allowed four runs in his two previous starts as well, both losses.
4) Alonso and McNeil knocked home runs on Wednesday. McNeil gave the Mets an early 1-0 lead while Alonso's in the sixth cut into the Rockies' lead. As so often occurs with Alonso when he homers, more history came with it. Alonso hit his 49th dinger of the year, which ties Mark McGwire's rookie home run record. The two home runs combined gave the Mets 225 home runs on the season as a team. That's a new franchise single-season record.
5) While the Mets did come back, it was about time. The Mets were bad with the bases loaded. On two occasions, the Mets left the bases juiced. In the third inning, Nimmo and McNeil singled and then Alonso was hit by a pitch with two outs. Cano then grounded out to end the frame. In the sixth inning after Alonso's homer, Cano doubled and then both Todd Frazier and Michael Conforto walked. With only one out, Amed Rosario popped out and Rivera grounded out to end the inning.
6) With Rivera and Syndergaard playing catch for most of the day, the Rockies had their way on the bases. In total, the Rockies had five stolen bases and advanced another base in the game because of a wild pitch. The Rockies used a few steals to plate what went down as their fourth run and nearly the game-winning run. After hitting a single in the sixth inning, Garrett Hampson stole second and third base on separate pitches. Eventually he scored the Rockies' fourth and final run when Raimel Tapia scored him with a single. The Mets dodged a bullet there.
