Six things to know from Wednesday's game
1) In the bottom of the 10th inning, Stephen Nogosek allowed the first two Phillies batters to reach base, setting the stage for former Met Jay Bruce to give the Phillies a walkoff win on an RBI double, just over the outstretched glove of Juan Lagares in center field.
2) Jason Vargas cruised through the first five innings on Wednesday night, allowing just one hit the first two times through the order. The Phillies finally got on the board against him in the sixth, as Jean Segura lofted a solo home run with one out. Vargas got out of the sixth by striking out Rhys Hoskins for his 10th strikeout of the game, tying his career high. He left the game after 6.1 innings, having allowed just three hits.
3) Seth Lugo was brought into the game with a 4-1 lead in the seventh and a runner at third. Just like Wilmer Font on Tuesday, Lugo couldn't hold the lead. He allowed RBI hits to Cesar Hernandez and Segura, tying the game at 4-4 before striking out Hoskins with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.
4) Dominic Smith must really enjoy hitting at Citizens Bank Park. For the third consecutive night, Smith lofted a home run to the opposite field, this time hitting a solo shot off of Nick Pivetta in the fourth inning. Smith now has seven home runs on the season. He was later pulled as part of a double switch, but he finished the night 3-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
5) Smith and Pete Alonso both stole the first bases of their young careers on Wednesday. Smith's steal ultimately lead to the Mets' third run, as he advanced to third after JT Realmuto's throw ended up in the outfield, and came around to score on Tomas Nido's RBI single.
6) After nearly hitting one out on Tuesday night, Jeff McNeil joined the home run club on Wednesday, lining a solo home run in the fifth inning to extend the Mets' lead to 2-0. McNeil nearly hit a game-tying two run home run on Tuesday that ended up being touched by a fan just a few inches below the right-field railing. McNeil later added an RBI double.
