Here's six things to know from Thursday's game

1. David Peterson took the mound for the Mets for the final time during the regular season, and certainly saved his best for last. The rookie went 7.0 innings for the first time in his career, tossing 107 pitches and finishing his night allowing one run, four hits and one walk, while striking out four. He finishes his rookie season with a 3.44 ERA.

2. Things were quiet for the most part through the first 3.5 innings. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Kurt Suzuki grounded a fielders choice that lead to Juan Soto being called out on his way to second. Robinson Cano had a chance to force the double play and get Suzuki out at first, but he didn't get a good grip on the ball as he was about to throw, and then elected to hold the throw instead.

That choice came back to hurt the Mets later in the inning, as a single out to center by Josh Harrison brought Suzuki home for the first run of the game.

3. The Mets responded quickly. After a leadoff single by Guillermo Heredia, Robinson Chirinos hit his first home run as a Met, a two-run shot out to right center to give New York a 2-1 lead.

Chirinos picked up his third RBI of the game in the next inning, hitting an infield single to second that brought in Cano from third for another score.

4. Yadiel Hernandez hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to make it a one run game at 3-2, but Edwin Diaz was able to finish the inning out and nab the Mets the win to keep their very slim playoff hopes alive.

5. Dom Smith continued his strong season with a 3-for-5 night to up his batting average to .322 on the season. With his double early in the third, he became one of just two players with 20 or more doubles this season (Freddie Freeman, 22).

6. Jeff McNeil came into the game batting .329 but couldn't find it at the plate Thursday, going 0-for-5. However, just McNeil and Amed Rosario were unable to get a hit, with the Mets offense doing damage at the plate with 12 hits.

The Mets and Nationals continue their final series of the regular season on Friday night at 6:05 p.m., with Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer slated to get the starts.
