Five takeaways from Saturday's game

1) Zack Wheeler worked his way through six innings of modest work. Wheeler allowed four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. The Braves capitalized on Wheeler with the long ball, as Ozzie Albies and Josh Donaldson homered in the third inning, and free bases, as Wheeler walked four.

Despite Friday's 14-inning game, the Mets still used four relievers on Saturday. Luis Avilan escaped with a strikeout and clean seventh inning, but the Braves added two insurance runs against Brad Brach in the eighth and then Edwin Diaz allowed two more in the ninth. Diaz also left the game with an injury and Chris Flexen came in to record the final two outs.

2) The Mets plated their first run thanks to an errant throw from the Braves with one out. Joe Panik hit a ground ball to Freddie Freeman at first base with one out and Freeman attempted to turn two. He got Amed Rosario out at second, but his throw required a huge reach from Adeiny Hechavarria and the ex-Met couldn't turn the play back to first. As that went on, Juan Lagares, who doubled to start the inning, scored.

3) While the Mets jumped on that error from the Braves, the home team had plenty of errors of their own. In the seventh inning, Jeff McNeil subbed in the game and doubled on the first pitch he saw since coming off the IL earlier in the day. Rosario then hit a grounder to shortstop and McNeil tried to advance to third on the play, but wasn't close as Hechavarria threw him out. During the ensuing at-bat, the Mets tried to pull off a hit and run with Panik at the plate but Rosario was thrown out by a mile by Braves catcher Francisco Cervelli, who also had two hits in the game.

But the biggest gaff came complements of JD Davis. Ronald Acuna hit a line drive single to Davis in left field which scored Rafael Ortega, who reached base on his second hit of the game. But Davis tossed a lackadaisical throw back into the infield and Billy Hamilton was watching the whole thing and sprinted home. Rosario didn't have a chance at a play and didn't bother throwing the ball home.

4) Wilson Ramos... still hitting. The Buffalo extended the major league leading hitting streak to 18-straight games. Ramos was 2-for-4 in the game with two singles.

5) On the plus side, Pete Alonso is on the verge of more Mets history, perhaps the pinnacle of all his records. The Mets made a brief comeback as they trailed 4-0. Alonso put his team in front with a monster home run to center field, a three-run shot, bringing the score to 5-4. It was his 41st homer of the year. Alonso now sits atop the Mets' record book in a tie with Carlos Beltran and Todd Hundley for the most home runs in a single season for the team, who both hit 41 homers in 2006 and 1996, respectively.

The Mets will finish their three-game series with the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. LHP Steven Matz (8-7, 4.18 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets against LHP Dallas Keuchel (4-5, 4.14 ERA) for the Braves.
