Five Takeaways from Saturday's game
1) Luis Guillorme picked a heck of a time to hit his first-career home run. After thinking he had walked, Guillorme stepped back into the batters back in the eighth and sent the next pitch into the upper deck in right field against pitcher Fernando Rodney, tying the game at three as Juan Soto hit a solo homer in the top half of the inning to give the Nats a brief 3-2 lead. The excellent hitting of J.D. Davis then continued, as he scored Joe Panik with a sacrifice fly for the game-winning run later in the frame.
2) The resurgence that RHP Noah Syndergaard has experienced continued against the Nats. Syndergaard allowed seven hits, two runs and two walks in seven innings. Syndergaard collected five strikeouts as well. With the seven innings of work, Syndergaard's reached that number of innings pitched in his last six starts, a streak that leads the majors. Syndergaard navigated a successful outing despite throwing 29 pitches in the first inning.
3) Three pitches, two homers. In the fourth, Davis hit his 14th homer of the season. Wilson Ramos must have decided he wanted to keep pace with Davis, as he smashed his 13th of the year just two pitches later. The back-to-back home runs tied the game as Soto hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Nationals.
4) Seth Lugo finished the rest of the game on the bump after Syndergaard. In his two innings, Lugo tied a franchise record by sending down his 26th straight hitter. Unfortunately he didn't grab outright record as Soto hit his solo home run during the next at-bat. Despite the homer, the Mets turned to Lugo for the effort in the ninth. He collected three strikeouts over his two inning, along with the win.
5) Jeff McNeil flashed some golden plays at second base defensively for the Mets, helping turn two double plays. In the second inning, Matt Adams hit a ground ball to second and McNeil tagged Soto and quickly threw out Adams at first. In the seventh inning, McNeil helped Syndergaard keep his prior mentioned streak as he turned a 4-6-3 double play with the help of Amed Rosario at shortstop on the turn.
