Pete Alonso and Robinson Cano both homered twice, as the Mets put a hurting on the Marlins with an 11-4 victory on Monday. >> Box Score

Five things to know from Monday’s game

1. Despite the final score, it was a precarious start to the game for Robert Gsellman and the Mets, as the Marlins plated a run just three batters into the bottom of the first. Gsellman labored, throwing 31 pitches in the first, but left the bases loaded to keep it a 1-0 game. He’d leave the game with two outs in the second to give way to Chasen Shreve, who was stellar in relief. The left-hander struck out five in 2 1/3 innings of perfect work.

2. The Mets loaded the bases themselves in the top of the second, with walks to Michael Conforto and Alonso sandwiching a Cano single. That set the stage for Dominic Smith, who ripped a double over the head of a stumbling Jon Berti in right to drive home two runs. An Amed Rosario double later in the inning brought home Smith to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.

3. And then, it was time for the power display. Cano got things going with a laser beam ripped just over the wall in right-center field. The two-run homer in the third gave the Mets a 5-1 lead. Then in the fifth inning, Alonso sent a towering fly ball to left that cleared the fence to make it a 6-1 game.

4. After Jeurys Familia allowed a homer to Jonathan Villar in the bottom of the fifth, the Mets broke it open in the top of the sixth, Brandon Nimmo tripled, then scored on a sac fly by Jeff McNeil to make it 7-2. After J.D. Davis walked, Cano demolished another ball to right-center, harder and further than his first. The blast, estimated at 443 feet, was his longest in three years. Alonso came up next and crushed his second of the night, another long drive to left. By the time things were said and done in the sixth, the Mets had opened up a 10-2 lead.

5. Brad Brach allowed three hits in the sixth but did not yield a run. Franklyn Kilome got into the ninth unscathed, but allowed two runs in the final inning. His three-inning outing still qualified him for his first major league save.
