In the final game of the 2020 regular season, the Mets were blown out by the Washington Nationals, 15-5. >> Box Score

Takeaways from Sunday’s game

1) Seth Lugo definitely didn’t want his final start of the season to go like this. He allowed six runs on five hits and two walks over just 1.1 innings of work. Chasen Shreve had to come in the second inning to clean things up.

2) Brad Brach and Steven Matz didn’t help matters after that. They both allowed three runs – Brach didn’t give up any hits but had three walks, while Matz gave up three hits, two of them homers. Dellin Betances also allowed three runs on two hits and three walks.

3) Pete Alonso had a great finish to his season, going 3-for-5 that included a 465-foot bomb for a homer on his first at-bat of the game. That’s good momentum to carry into the offseason. Brandon Nimmo also went 2-for-5.

4) Jared Hughes and Jeurys Familia had good games on the bump, not allowing a run. Familia was more impressive in his two-inning performance, though, striking out two and allowing just one hit.

5) The Mets finished the shortened season with a 26-34 record, which was tied last in the NL East.

What's Next

The Mets won't be participating in the postseason and will instead head into an interesting offseason that is expected to have new ownership in Steve Cohen once MLB owners approve his purchase of the team.
