Like all players across Major League Baseball, Mets reliever Seth Lugo is adjusting to the “new normal” of Summer Camp.

With extensive health and safety protocols put in place in an effort to keep players and staff members as safe as possible, the 60-game 2020 season will be unlike any other, but Lugo has never questioned whether or not it was worth it to play in the shortened campaign.

“I live my life to play baseball,” Lugo said on Saturday. “They said we’re playing and I was ready to go. … I personally have the belief that you don’t live in fear.”

The Mets workouts have been staggered over the last two days, with pitchers broken into two groups in the morning and afternoon, and hitters in the evening.

“It’s a little tough, especially being around some guys I haven’t seen in months, some of my best friends on the team, and you can’t get too close to each other, and staggered stretch times,” Lugo said. “Everything is real small groups. It’s been different but I I think I make the adjustment well.”

Baseball’s hiatus had a couple of silver linings for Lugo. Most importantly, Seth and his wife, Amanda, welcomed their first son, James, on March 19.

Aside from being able to spend quality time with his newborn, Lugo was also ale to fully recover from a toe injury that hampered him during spring training.

“I’d say pretty soon after I got home in March, I’d say even before April I was running at full speed and I had completely forgotten about it,” Lugo said. “I think it’s 100 percent healed.”

But now, it’s time to get back to baseball, and Lugo is ready to be used in whatever role Luis Rojas and the coaching staff have in mind for him, though his desire to be a starter has not changed.

“As far as my role, I’m not sure,” Lugo said. “It’s going to be different for everybody on different teams, dealing with only 60 games. Luis knows how much I want to start. I don’t think any coaches doubt what I want to do. I don’t think I need to say anything, so I haven’t.”

But if Lugo’s role does remain in the bullpen, where he was excellent for the Mets in 2019, the right-hander has high expectations for the group.

“I’m glad we have so many good arms, so many different options,” Lugo said. “Everybody is so much different than each other. I feel like we have so many different weapons. I think our bullpen is set to be really good is we all stay healthy and perform like we should.”
