The next couple of weeks should be a barometer for which way the Mets decide to go at the trade deadline, but they are reportedly keeping an eye on a couple of Tigers relievers.
According to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press, the Mets have checked in on a pair of Tigers relief pitchers, Shane Greene and Joe Jimenez. The Mets' bullpen has been a sore spot for the team this season, and any addition should help a group that has struggled, particularly in the month of June.
Greene, a 30-year-old who is under contract through the 2021 season, was recently named to the AL All-Star team and has pitched to a 1.09 ERA with the Tigers this season. Though he struggled last season to the tune of a 5.12 ERA, he's earned 22 saves this season while holding right-handed hitters to a .103 batting average.
Jimenez, meanwhile, earned an All-Star nod in 2018 but has struggled this year, posting a 4.96 ERA. At just 24 years old, Jimenez would be under contract through the 2024 season, making him an affordable non-rental option.
At 28-54, the Tigers are most likely to be sellers come the July 31 trade deadline. The Mets are nine games under .500, but they currently sit just 6.5 games out of a National League wild card spot.
