Mets prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong will undergo surgery on his right shoulder for a GLAD lesion (glenoid labral articular disruption), the team announced Tuesday.

Crow-Armstrong recently underwent a physical examination and MRI that revealed a tear of the labrum as well as an injury to the articular cartilage of the shoulder.

Mets Medical Director Dr. David Altchek confirmed the diagnosis, and the surgery will be performed in the coming weeks by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Crow-Armstrong, whom SNY contributor Joe DeMayo ranked as the Mets' No. 4 prospect entering the season, had been off to a hot start for Low-A St. Lucie before suffering the injury.

In 32 plate appearances in six games for St. Lucie, Crow-Armstrong was hitting .417/.563/.500 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and six runs scored.

That the 19-year-old Crow-Armstrong has had his 2021 season disrupted is doubly painful for him and the Mets considering that he played zero minor league games in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Viewed as a gifted defensive center fielder who has the tools to be an above average hitter at the big league level, Crow-Armstrong's MLB ETA entering the season was 2024.

It's unclear how aggressive the Mets will be with Crow-Armstrong when he returns from his injury as far as his minor league assignment is concerned, but it's fair to believe his MLB ETA could be pushed back.
