After being named to the National League All-Star team earlier on Sunday afternoon, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso confirmed that he will participate in the 2023 Home Run Derby in Seattle on July 10.
The slugger made the announcement during an in-game interview with the ESPN broadcast team during Sunday night's matchup with the San Francisco Giants.
“You can count me in, guys,” Alonso announced during the broadcast.
Alonso won the Home Run Derby in back-to-back contests in 2019 and 2021. The first baseman seeks his third crown in just his fifth major league season.
“It’s really special,” Alonso added. “To be selected for the third time in five years, it’s an honor.”
The two-time champion joins a current field of Julio Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Mookie Betts and Randy Arozarena to compete in Seattle.
“It’s a super talented field,” Alonso said. “I think this one is going to be one to remember.”
Alonso posts 24 home runs in 2023 and has hit 170 homers since the start of 2019.
