Pete Alonso is just like the rest of us, counting the days until baseball is back. But in the meantime, the Mets' first baseman is training down in Florida for the new season.

Alonso joined The New York Post's "Amazin' But True" podcast on Wednesday and discussed what he's been up to this offseason.

"Everything's been going well so far," Alonso told Jake Brown and Nelson Figueroa. "I've been training my ass off, been working really hard in the gym. Recently been starting to ease myself into getting some work done in the cage and throwing and taking some ground balls. ... Also I've been working pretty thoroughly with our analytical department. ... it's been a tremendous help for me, helping me formulate an amazing attack plan for next year.

"Whenever this next season starts, I'm going to be ready as ever and I'm extremely motivated to kick some ass and win a championship."

Alonso's relationship with Dom Smith grew before our very eyes on and off the field, and Alonso is very happy for his recent success this past season.

"Dom's a great player and I love seeing my teammates succeed," Alonso said of Smith. "Last year seeing him absolutely ball out, that was cool. I mean he's a hell of a player. ... Playing well and doing well it's awesome for him personally, so it's great all around."

Steve Cohen bought the Mets last month and become a very hands-on owner, engaging with fans on Twitter very often and making it a point to create relationships with his players. Alonso said he's already spoken with Cohen since he took over the franchise.

"I talked with him — I believe I'd have to say — a couple of weeks ago and it was a short eight-minute phone call, but I really enjoyed talking with him," Alonso said of Cohen. "I mean he seems extremely enthusiastic about the future.

"It's been a nice offseason so far, it's been really really really great and I'm excited to see what team we end up with at spring training when we fill some of the gaps. ... I'm as anxious as anybody else to see who we get because it's fun, I get to see who my new teammates are."

Alonso also touched a bit on the Robinson Cano PED suspension, stating over and over how much Cano has helped him and how much he looks up to him, and that although it's an "extremely unfortunate" situation, he still "think's the world of him."

The 2020 season miraculously got through its entire 60 game schedule and the playoffs, which Alonso said he was happy to be a part of as someone who "loves the game of baseball." But he also hopes to see fans back in stadiums soon.

"I'm so damn excited to have butts back in the seats. I miss people going absolutely bonkers after [Jacob deGrom] gets a big strikeout or [Michael Conforto] or [Brandon] Nimmo or anybody else makes a big play in the outfield or someone hits a home run. I miss feeling the ground shake."
